History of St John's

St Johns Church was built in 1847 and decidated on the 12th February 1848 by the first Bishop of Manchester, the Right Reverend James Prince Lee.

Inside the Church are many reminders of those who have worshipped and witnessed here over the years. Stained glass windows, furniture, hymn books and the small chapel have been provided by friends and relatives in memory of their loved ones.

Church registers tell of those for whom the church has played an important role at times of great joy as well as times of deep sorrow. They also record the faithful acts of worship which take place week by week.

The Parish is no longer the hive of industry it was when the church was built. Cotton weaving, spinning, bleach works, coal mining, paper making and quarrying were all industries within the parish boundary along with grocers shops, butchers, a chip shop, bakery and bespoke tailors. People now commute to manchester and further afield for their daily work. Throughout the many changes which have taken place, St John's Church has continued to announce the "Good News" proclaimed by our Patron Saint John the Baptist some two thousand years ago.

We invite you to share in our worship.
