A YEAR IN THE LIFE OF ST PHILIP’S – 2002

A festival with flowers was organised to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the consecration of the church in 1927. Organisations connected with the church and a couple of local companies were asked to display flowers in windows and around the church with the theme ‘Then & Now’.   Twelve months of planning and organising the whole year of 2002.  We held an event each month starting in February with a ‘Film Night’ and finishing in September with a ‘Band Concert’.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS

FEBRUARY – FILM NIGHT

An annual event always held the Saturday before Easter, but on this occasion, we decked out the hall with bunting, decorated the walls with 1920’s photograph’s & memorabilia.  We also had vintage cars in the car park.  Some people dressed up and had there faces painted.

APRIL –OLD & NEW MUSIC NIGHT IN CHURCHOur organist played some music old & new, we had a lady accompanied on the piano who gave us a couple of numbers, we had two of our male congregation dressed up as fairies singing ‘Nobody loves a Fairy when she’s 40’.  We had a good old sing-a-long, some old some new.

We had a special Family Communion Service of Sunday 26th May with Guest Preacher The Rt. Rev’d David Gillet – Bishop of Bolton and on 28th the actual day the church was dedicated 75 years on, we held a Songs of Praise, which were hymns by request.

This was held in the church hall, we had around 6 teams who took part, we enjoyed Strawberries & Cream for supper, it was an evening of getting together for something different.

AUGUST – FESTIVAL WITH FLOWERS

Theme ‘Then & Now’(see write-ups and photos, under heading of Festival with Flowers)

SEPTEMBER – BRASS BAND CONCERT

We invited a local Brass Band along to give us a concert, this soon turned into a sing-a-long.  This was the most fitting end to what was probably the busiest year in the church’s history
