History of St Pauls

 1841

 

 The Ashton brothers (Cotton Mill Owners) built the day school in Crow Lane also for use as a Sunday School and church services.  They later donated former farm land as site for a Church.  Cost of Church and grounds £3,400 (£2,000 raised by public subscription, balance donated by Messrs Ashton.
 1850 Church consecrated 23 October
 1865 First confirmation
 1870 Church extended at Nort Side., money provided mostly by Wm Grant who also defrayed costs of choir stalls, organ chamber and organ which was formerly in Brompton Oratory, London.  Stained glass window commemorating this obscured by organ pipes.
 1879 Bazaar/Public subscription raised £1200 for :-
 1881 (dedicated) peal of eight bells
 1882 Pew doors removed.  St Paul's now "free" church
 1900 Bells re-cast, new clock in tower to mark Queen Victoria's jubille
 1909 Alabaster Reredos installed
 1912 Electric lighting installed
 1920 Plaque placed on pulpit in memory of Great War victims
 1928 Nov.12-18 Diamond jubilee celebrations
 1934 Organ re-built incorporating original
 1940 Chancel panelled/communion rail installed by Heys family
 1950 Centenary celebrations
 1981 St Paul's united with St John in the Wilderness
 1998 Parish Room completed
