ST ANDREW’S REACHES 175
Not a local cricket score, but the number of years that St Andrew’s Church, Ramsbottom has been in existence. Built originally as a Scottish Presbyterian Church and funded by the Grant family the Church opened in 1834 and is now celebrating it’s 175th birthday.
Church members have been putting together the “Seven Generations” exhibition and photographic display in the church telling the story of the life of St Andrew’s for the past seven generations, including the story of how the church became an Anglican Parish Church.
There was a preview evening for church members on Saturday night and the exhibition will be open to members of the public on Thursday and Friday evenings, 25th and 26th June from 6pm to 9pm and on Saturday 27th June from 2pm to 6pm.
The Bishop of Manchester, Bishop Nigel, was the special preacher at a Celebration and Thanksgiving Service held on Sunday 21st June as one of a number of events taking place to celebrate the 175 years. After the service he joined church members in an informal lunch and took the opportunity to have a look at the exhibition and photographic display.
Bishop Nigel commented, “It is important that we remember all those who have been part of the life of this church over the past 7 generations, but we must also look forward to serving the next generation and making sure that St Andrew’s maintains its role in the local community”.
Further events to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of St Andrew’s will take place later in the year, and there will be other opportunities to visit the “Seven Generations” exhibition and photographic display during the summer.
